The Right Age for Treatment

Dr Chetlin

Both children and adults can benefit from a beautiful, healthy smile. Straight teeth not only make it easier to brush and floss, they also play an important role in building self esteem, confidence and a positive self-image.

Children

Orthodontic treatment used to be postponed until the adolescent years, when all permanent teeth were present in the mouth. Through research and various studies, we now know that many orthodontic problems can be treated earlier and much easier by working with the growth that takes place in younger children. We subscribe to the American Association of Orthodontists' recommendation that every child have an evaluation for orthodontics by age 7 (earlier if a problem is detected). Often nothing is necessary at this young age, but an early examination allows us to monitor the dental development. This "recall" program, where we watch growth and development, is at no charge to you unless we have to take radiographs. It has been found that early intervention can significantly reduce the need for removal of permanent teeth. Also younger children are more enthusiastic and cooperative which reduces total treatment time significantly. In many cases, positive results can be achieved during this growth period which produces positive orthodontic experiences.

Adults

Beautiful, healthy smiles are possible for almost anyone. The biological movement of teeth is possible in patients of all ages. The condition for a person's teeth, gums, and supporting bone is the most important element in deciding whether or not to begin treatment. Properly aligned teeth are not only easier to clean, they can go a long way to improving a person's self-image.
